Artist Statement

I work at the expressive end of the ceramics spectrum, usually building sculptural forms with red terracotta clay. My recent sculpture addresses the precarious nature of life as I deal with difficult emerging historical knowledge, along with the accelerated change we collectively experience. I love to deliberately complicate my surfaces! I strive to imbue meaning, and make marks at each stage of the process, with clay, slips, underglazes and glazes. It is a metaphor for historical events that can’t be changed - that need to be made the best of - because whatever is done to a ceramic surface can’t usually be totally forgotten. I always look for some light!
