Artist Statement
As a ceramic artist, I strive to create work that reflects both purpose and beauty. My art takes two distinct forms: the first carries a profound message to the community, addressing pressing issues such as pollution, environmental challenges, smoking, drug abuse, dishonesty, and the struggles of daily life. Through these works, I aim to inspire change and raise awareness, believing that art has the power to spark meaningful conversations and transformations in society.
The second form of my ceramic work focuses on aesthetics—crafting pieces that evoke joy, beauty, and harmony. These creations are a celebration of the artistry and craftsmanship that bring happiness to the viewer. I deeply believe that every artist has a message to share and a role in fostering a better community through their work. Coming from a country grappling with significant challenges, I have seen firsthand how art can serve as both a beacon of hope and a source of solace.
My passion for ceramics began in childhood, inspired by my grandmother, a skilled potter who taught me the traditional techniques of clay preparation and pottery-making. I vividly remember accompanying her to collect clay from the mountains and watching her transform it into functional and decorative pieces. Her influence instilled in me a love for ceramics that shaped my path in life.
After graduating from the Department of Ceramics in 2009, I participated in numerous exhibitions and competitions, earning recognition and awards that further fueled my dedication. From 2010 to 2014, I served as an associate teaching assistant at my university, sharing my knowledge and passion with aspiring artists.
My techniques span a wide range, from hand-building intricate clay sculptures using strips of clay to wheel-throwing and plaster-molding for vases and urns. I take great pride in decorating my pieces with elaborate details like twisted clay ropes, flowers, and leaves. My work also includes innovative approaches such as Naked Raku—a technique I pioneered in Libya—using bird feathers, horsehair, and metallic luster to achieve unique finishes that resemble metal.
Since moving to Canada, I have sought opportunities to showcase my talent and creativity, beginning with The Turtle House. This experience served as a stepping stone, affirming my commitment to furthering my craft and making an impact in my new community.
Through my ceramic art, I aim to communicate meaningful messages, uplift spirits, and preserve the rich traditions that shaped my journey. Art is more than my profession; it is my way of connecting with others and contributing to the world around me.
