Queenie Xu is a ceramist and designer currently based in Toronto.
Raised in China, Queenie received her BFA in Industrial Design. During her time in Jingdezhen, she learned the history and skills of ceramics from her surroundings. After volunteering at The Pottery Workshop in Jingdezhen in 2013, she fell in love with clay.
In 2014, she moved to Canada, enrolled in the Sheridan College Craft and Design Programme and received her Bachelor's Degree. She has continued her practice in ceramics since that time. Her. Work has been exhibited at the Alberta Crafts Council (2018), OCAD University, Gardiner Museum in the Sheridan College Graduate Show (2017), Resident Artist Show, Mississauga Living Art Centre and FUSION’s Fireworks Travelling Exhibition in Newmarket, Burlington, Waterloo, Chatham and Toronto (2019).
Statement:
“My designs seek to explore how ceramic objects can be containers of emotion, as well as how the simplicity of an object can be a complex expression. I think about the relationship between objects and the space by which they are surrounded. I create functional pieces that can move beyond their function towards a sculptural installation.”
