Chiho Tokita was born in Tokyo, raised in New York City, and has been a studio potter in Toronto since 2000. She learned her ceramic skills through the Hyde Park Art Center in Chicago and at the Woodlawn Pottery Studio in Toronto, where she was a member. Prior to focusing on clay, she was a clinical social worker and psychotherapist in Chicago.
Working within the tradition of functional ceramics, she is interested in form. Her works are minimally glazed to highlight the form and the marks of the process. She is inspired by objects that convey understated elegance and simplicity.
In addition to making functional ware, she is currently interested in vase forms, which are wheel thrown parts that are then assembled together.
Her works can be found at The Guild Shop and The Gardiner Museum Gallery Shop, among other places in Ontario. She has also been an exhibitor at the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition for the past three years.
