Abbey Smith is a ceramic artist practicing in Toronto, Canada. She was born and raised in the U.S. and has travelled and studied to find inspiration from the ceramic traditions of the Southwest, Central America, Japan, England, Italy and France.
Her love of clay as an expressive medium and her fascination with its history began in undergraduate studies at Bennington College, in Vermont. There she studied design fundamentals, ceramics, colour theory, printmaking and sculpture. After graduation she taught art in the New York City public school system and received a Master of Science degree in Art Education from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn New York, where she continued to study ceramics, sculpture, and printmaking.
Smith settled in Southern Ontario in 1967 and continued to develop her ceramic techniques in her home studio, and pursued studies at Georgian and George Brown Colleges. During that time she continued to teach in the public secondary schools in Toronto, at The Royal Ontario Museum, at Seneca College, and provided consultation on curriculum development in the arts.
Her recent work consists of raku ware, mid-range and earthenware wall pieces, and decorative functional ceramics.
